	Abstract:	Peter Witt (1869-1948) was the Cleveland, Ohio traction commissioner (1912-1915) under Mayor Newton D. Baker and city councilman (1924-1927) who served as a transit consultant for several major United States cities. He was a close friend and ally of Cleveland mayor Tom L. Johnson. The collection consists of correspondence, speeches, articles, reports, campaign literature, interview notes made by Louis Plost, scrapbooks, and newspaper clippings, relating chiefly to Witt's political activities and especially to his association with Tom L. Johnson, mayor of Cleveland. Some of the papers relate to Witt's work as a transit consultant in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Newark, New Jersey, in the 1920s. Correspondents include Eugene V. Debs, Elizabeth J. Hauser, Tom L. Johnson, P.J. Mitten, and Brand Whitlock.

2	Title:	Anton L. Maresh Papers

	Abstract:	Anton L. maresh was a Cleveland, Ohio, musician, piano store owner, Republican politician, and collector of Abraham Lincoln material, who was also known as Anthony L. Maresh. His piano store on East 55th Street became the Republican political headquarters for Cleveland's southeast side, and in 1913, Maresh and his associates helped launch the political candidacy of Harry L. Davis for mayor. Maresh retired from the piano business in 1937, but actively pursued his hobby of collecting Lincoln memorabilia, building one of the largest private collections of Lincoln documents and lecturing on Lincoln lore to various groups. He served as long-time president of the local branch of the Lincoln Association of Ohio. The collection consists of personal correspondence, files on Cleveland politics and the music business, clippings, and financial and legal documents. Included is a collection of Lincoln material, consisting of copies of documents and facsimiles, addresses and writings about Lincoln by Maresh, writings on Lincoln by other authors, magazine articles and clippings. The collection pertains primarily to Maresh's interest in Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War, as well as Maresh's activities in the local Lincoln Association. Additional materials pertain to Maresh's music business and political activities.

	Abstract:	The collection consists of letters and documents, written or signed by United States President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), and numerous petitions, primarily concerning patronage, addressed to Lincoln and arranged by state. Also includes 50 letters in which Lincoln is mentioned or discussed, including letters to or from Edward Bates, Andrew Boyd, Salmon P. Chase, William Pitt Fessenden, Andrew Johnson, and Edwin M. Stanton.

	Abstract:	Benjamin F. Wade, an Ashtabula County, Ohio, lawyer and zealous abolitionist, was one of the foremost Radical Republican United States Senators of the American Civil War. Wade demanded that Lincoln make the war a crusade to free the slaves, and he led the charge to keep control of Reconstruction in the hands of Congress. His family, descended from Jonathan Wade, a 1632 immigrant to Massachusetts, was one of the most prominent families of Ashtabula County during the 19th century. The first of the family to settle in Ashtabula County was James Wade, father of Benjamin, who arrived there in the 1820s. The collection consists of correspondence, wedding invitations, genealogy notes, newspaper clippings, and a freight receipt. The collection pertains to the views of Radical Republicans during the early stages of the Civil War. Caroline Wade's letter strongly expresses her (and probably her husband's) negative views of President Abraham Lincoln and General George B. McClellan. The genealogical material is also useful for information on the Wade family of the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as the families of Dudley, Newhall, Hills, Upham, Wigglesworth, and Leonard.

	Abstract:	Albert Gallatin Riddle (1816-1902) was an author, lawyer, State representative, United States Representative from Ohio (1861-1863), and U.S. Consul to Cuba. the collection consists of correspondence, a manuscript of autobiographical writings, romances, historical novels, accounts of life in Cuba, personal papers and certificates, files of law cases, newspaper clippings, souvenirs of official occasions in Washington, D.C., and other miscellaneous papers. Consists chiefly of letters from well-known politicians, lawyers, and prominent Ohioans, referring to matters of legal and political importance and to Riddle's books.

	Abstract:	William Ganson Rose (1878-1957) was a noted Cleveland, Ohio, author, historian, lecturer, advertising executive, and civic promoter. In 1915, Rose formed Wm. G. Rose, Inc., his own advertising and public relations firm. He managed numerous fairs and expositions, including the first Cleveland Electrical Exposition (1914), the Gordon Bennett International Balloon Race and Aerial Carnival (1930), the Great Lakes Exposition (1936-1937), and the Cleveland Sesquicentennial (1946). In 1916-1917, Rose chaired the group which promoted and ultimately secured passage of a bond issue financing the construction of the Cleveland Public Auditorium. He served on the board of Hiram House, a Cleveland social settlement founded by George Bellamy in 1896, and belonged to the American Press Humorists and the Cleveland Athletic Club. Rose authored several books and numerous articles for newspapers and magazines, as well as a comprehensive history of Cleveland entitled Cleveland, the making of a city, published in 1950. Rose died in 1957. The collection consists of newspaper clippings, promotional material, correspondence, biographical material, photographs, reports, and historical material pertaining to the history of Cleveland, Ohio and many of its prominent citizens, but also including material on national and international events and personages. Individuals, organizations and events that figure most prominently include: the American Press Humorists, Newton D. Baker, George Bellamy and Hiram House, Charles F. Brush, the Cleveland Sesquicentennial of 1946, the visit to Cleveland of Emile Coue, Thomas A. Edison, the Gordon Bennett International Balloon Race and Aerial Carnival of 1930, Abraham Lincoln, the Cleveland Public Auditorium, John D. Rockefeller, the Cleveland War Service Center, the Cleveland Grays, and the writings of Whiting Williams. Also included is a significant amount of biographical material on numerous women in Cleveland's history, material pertaining to sports, particularly baseball, and material relating to the theater in Cleveland, with newspaper reviews of performances.
